Foldit is a protein folding computer game developed by university scientists that allows players to contribute to cutting-edge scientific research on human health, bioengineering, and biology. It is free to play and not-for-profit. Every week, Foldit scientists post new puzzles focused on the latest problems in protein folding, and discoveries made in the game are then published in peer-reviewed journals.

Foldit allows players to create Lua scripts called “recipes” to programmatically modify in silico protein designs to help optimize their intended functionality and likelihood of successfully folding up in the real world. My latest Foldit recipe, Random Pull and Jiggle 2.0, has over 50 users currently, making it one of the top 3-4% most-used scripts on Foldit. I was able to use this software to place first in the Design of the Month: December 2022 challenge, and second in the Design of the Month: November 2022 challenge.

As neither a biology nor Lua expert, I am humbled and delighted to be able to contribute to science in such a fun and engaging way, and I recommend Foldit scripting to anyone interested in giving protein design a shot.
